Professor
Mahmoud Maher Ragab was borne on May 20, 1921 in Mit Ghamr,
Deqahliya Governorate, Egypt. He was the past Vice Dean of the
Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University and the Editor in Chief of
the Egyptian Journal of Phytopathology for more than 20 years. He
had a long and distinguished career in plant pathology as being one
of the early great pioneers in mycology and fungal diseases in
Egypt. He died on August 19, 2003 in Giza, Egypt.
Professor
Ragab obtained his Bachelor degree in 1944 from Fouad I (Cairo)
University, and then he went to USA to obtain the M.Sc. degree in
1949 from Nebraska Univ. and the Ph.D. in 1952 from Iowa Univ.
He was
appointed as a Demonstrator in the Faculty of Agriculture, Fouad I
University in 1944, lecturer in 1953, Assistant Professor in 1960,
Professor in 1967 and Chairman Professor of the Agricultural Botany
and Plant Pathology Department in 1979 and then nominated as the
Vice Dean of Student Affairs from 1979 to 1981 when became Emeritus
Professor of Plant Pathology.
He was
selected as the Chairman of the Permanent Scientific Committee of
Agric. Botany and Plant Pathology and as Supreme Council of the
Egyptian Universities. Also, he was appointed as a member in the
Supreme Committee for Awarding State Prizes for Encouragement of
Plant Pathology Scientists. He was always selected as a scientific
referee for many projects either introduced by the Agric. Res.
Centre or by the National Academy of Scientific Res. and Technology.
Professor
Ragab was an active member in many National and International
Scientific Societies (Mycology and Sigma Xi, USA). He was selected
as ISPP Councilor of the Egyptian Phytopathological Society. He
attended and introduced scientific articles in many local and
international conferences in Mycology and Plant Pathology since
1961. In the national conferences and congresses organized by the
Egyptian Society of Plant Pathology, he was always selected as the
Chairman of the Scientific Committee, even in the Tenth Congress
(December, 2003). He presided the 8`'' Congress held in 1997 and
also presided the scientific sessions of several national
conferences and symposia organized by the Egyptian universities and
institutes.
He was awarded
the Medal for Merit from President Nasser in 1957 and the State
Medal in 1983 from President Moubarak. He also awarded the "Decree
of Merit" in 1998 from the International Biological Centre,
Cambridge, England. Also, several Honorable Certificates were
forwarded to Prof Ragab, either from the F.A.O. or from the Deans of
his college, since 1991 till 2002.
He published
more than 76 articles in national and foreign Journals of Plant
Pathology. He supervised over 56 M.Sc. and Ph.D. Theses since 1952
till 2003. He was selected as the examiner for more than 60 research
Theses, either in his college or in other universities. Professor
Ragab was the first author of an Arabic text in Plant Pathology. He
also contributed in translation in Arabic of some important
textbooks as well as the evaluation and revision of many Arabic
texts appearing in the last two decades.
Professor Ragab is missed but always
remembered by his students and colleagues. His thoughts and ethics
are stilt perpetual leading most of his colleagues and students.
